Early Childhood Classes:

The Early Childhood years, (ages 4-6) is a time of exploring, discovering and absorbing everything around them. Students at this age are also learning how to work with other students and how to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. These skills, in turn, promote self-confidence and critical thinking in the child. Exploring and discovering opportunities are abundant, both in the Montessori classroom and in the outdoor learning environment at Teton View Montessori.

In the Early Childhood classroom, your child works within 5 areas. Practical Life, Cultural Studies, Sensorial, Math, and Language.

Practical life lessons teach skills such as how to get dressed (snaps, buttons, zippers, etc.) how to prepare snacks, set the table, care for plants and animals. They also learn manners such as when to say please and thank you, listening without interrupting, resolving conflicts and being kind and helpful. Such activities help provide the child with a sense of independence, and refine their fine and gross motor skills.

Cultural Studies includes a wide range of subjects including history, art, music, science, geography. Children learn about the world around them through works on the shelves but also guest speakers to present personal life experiences from various countries. Learning about other children around the world, helps them develop a respect for all living things and a value for diversity.

The sensorial area of the classroom helps children refine skills in perceiving the world through their senses. They in turn learn how to describe and name their experiences. Doing this lays the foundation for learning to sort and classify – skills that are fundamental to so many other academic subjects.

Math studies are learned through beautifully crafted materials. The children are able to practice identifying numerals, understand place value, practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Because of their understanding gained through practicing on materials, children develop a firm understanding of math concepts instead of just memorizing math facts.

Language is such a fundamental piece of the Early Childhood classroom. Children learn how to write, how to pronounce letter sounds, how to combine sounds to make words, and how to build sentences. Because these foundational lessons are presented to them, children learn to read easier and more spontaneously.
